NEW DELHI: Unrest continued in northeast parts of Delhi on Tuesday resulting in death of seven people, including a head constable of Delhi Police. Violence spiralled over the amended citizenship law in northeast Delhi, turning it into a battlefield with frenzied protesters torching houses, shops, vehicles and hurling stones.
Affected areas of northeast Delhi include Jafrabad, Chand Bagh, Maujpur, Bhajanpura, Kardampuri, Gokulpuri, Khajuri and Karawal Nagar.
CM Kejriwal visits Rajghat, calls for restoration of peace
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday visited Mahatma Gandhi's memorial in Rajghat and said violence will not benefit anyone as he called for restoration of peace in the national capital in the wake of violence in northeast Delhi, which claimed seven lives.
Kejriwal visited Rajghat along with his MLAs.
"Six civilians and one policemen have died. Violence will not benefit anyone. Mahatma Gandhi was a worshiper of non-violence, we prayed for restoration of peace in Delhi," he said after the visit.
He is expected to meet the family of the deceased head constable Ratan Lal in Burari. Kejriwal will also meet the injured persons at GTB Hospital and Max Hospital.
1,000 armed policemen being deployed in Delhi
An armed battalion of Delhi Police, comprising around 1,000 personnel, is being deployed in violence-hit areas of Delhi while inter-state borders are being closely monitored, officials said on Tuesday.
This was conveyed at a high-level meeting convened by home minister Amit Shah and attended by Delhi's LG Anil Baijal, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and commissioner of police Amulya Patnaik, among others.
Special officers along with the additional forces are being deployed in violence-hit areas of Delhi where at least seven people, including a policeman, were killed.
Home minister Amit Shah calls meeting
A high-level meeting convened by Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday resolved to enhance police-MLA coordination in Delhi and quell rumour-mongering so that the violence in the city could be stopped, sources said.
The meeting, attended by Delhi LG Anil Baijal, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, commissioner of police Amulya Patnaik and others, also resolved that workers of political parties should join hands to restore peace in the city and peace committees be reactivated in all localities.
All those attending the meeting stressed that rumour-mongering had to be quelled, a source said.
The leaders said police-MLA coordination has to be enhanced and workers of different political parties should join hands so that peace is restored.
Owaisi urges Centre to deploy Army to curb
Delhi violenceAIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has urged the Office of the
Prime Minister of India(PMO) to deploy Army in Delhi to curb violence in the wake of the protest against CAA.
He also alleged that the police have failed to fulfill their duties and are "colluding with mobs."
Taking to Twitter, he said, "The situation in North East Delhi is only getting worse. If @PMOIndia wants to restore peace, it is incumbent on you that Army takes over the area. Cops have abdicated their duty and are colluding with mobs. The only way to secure lives and limbs is to hand over the area to the army."
